We have already introduced and analyzed in Part 1 (Theory #3) a small trick to build easier new habits which will help us create a better version of ourselves!
A happy and positive mindset is always striving for adopting new habits that can boost Motivation, Productivity, and above all Clarity of Mind! So, it is really important to find more ways to make this process easier!
Another effective way to achieve that is “ The Rule of 2”. Let’s clarify this trick a little bit further, but first, let’s talk about Motivation.
Motivation is the Key
Forming new habits is a difficult process that requires lots of effort and time; discipline and consistency!
The key factor here is Motivation!
“Motivation is the fuel of our mental engine”
Motivation determines if the process will be a success or a failure… The more motivated we are, the more possibilities we have to form new habits!
But, having Motivation constantly is impossible…
The modern lifestyle, especially everyday life pace, can overwhelm our brain! This can lead to stress and as a result to lack of Motivation! That is the reason that we need “mental tools” to help our mind to keep a certain level of Motivation, even when it is facing a negative and stressful situation!
How to boost Motivation?
This is where “The Rule of 2” comes in! The trick is quite simple: you have to spend just 2 minutes daily in order to form a new habit! Just 2 minutes! That’s it!
”2 minutes can make a difference”
This small trick is effective because it is taking into consideration the way our brains are structured.
Brains love patterns/routines/habits! This is the way they internalize, organize, and use the external information! But, brains love only the long-established ones! New mental patterns/routines/habits need lots of time and effort in order to be structured.
“The Rule of 2” will make this process a lot easier! You just need 2 minutes only to build new habits!
But, is the trick enough to build a new habit? Well… No!
Using ”The Rule of 2” is one key element that we need in order to build new habits. The other one is ”consistency”!
When you decide that you want to add a new habit into your life, prepare yourself to spend lots of effort on it!
You can imagine this process like bodybuilding! A bodybuilder follows a strict and consistent daily program of weight lifting, exercising, and diet! This is the only way, proven by science and research, that can help the body build muscles to grow more!
This is exactly what our small trick is trying to do here! The goal is to train your brain muscle on a daily basis so it can create new mental patterns, but in an easy and indirect way!
So, remember to be consistent with “The Rule of 2”!
Be your Brain’s Mentor
The last thing we should really take into consideration is the following personal quote:
“Be a Mentor of your Brain”
As an adult, one of the most important roles we should practice is: to be a Mentor of your Brain! It is our own responsibility to treat ourselves with respect and try always to create a better version of ourselves! So, we should choose wisely the habits/skills we want to adopt, as well as, clever ways to achieve it! (like ”the Rule of 2)
When we realize that, then it is a lot easier to adopt a new habit because we simply understand that the new habit gives the proper support to our brain as a real mentor does!
Things to Remember
“The Rule of 2” is a small and easy mental trick that helps us build easier new habits and create a better version of ourselves! The trick is quite simple: you have to spend just 2 minutes daily in order to form a new habit! It is really important to remember that in order for the trick to be successful we need to 1. be patient and spend lots of time and effort 2. try to be the Mentor of our own mind!
How to implement “The Rule of 2”?
Ok! Now we know this small trick! But, how can we put it into action? Here are some examples of ”The Rule of 2” that will help build habits a lot easier!
- I want to start going to the gym! This is a quite common new habit that most of us want to start! So, how can we “trick” our brain to accept this habit into our daily routine? Well, a clever way is to spend 2 minutes every day just to put on our gym shoes! I know that it sounds weird! But, you have at least to give it a try! See the results by yourself!
- I want to start Journaling! This is a quite productive and helpful habit that can help us a lot to organize our thoughts and our inner world in general! How to do it?! Well, we can spend 2 minutes every day, before lunch, writing down some thoughts! Our thoughts can be random (something like a brainstorming) or a specific issue/problem that we have!
- The third example is going to be a personal one! I really wanted to learn to play the piano. I was so motivated to start, but it was so difficult to stick to it! So I thought to try our simple trick to see if it works! I started playing the piano every night for 2 minutes, just before sleeping (well I never played 2 minutes! It was always more than 10 minutes). Anyway, I tried to stick to that habit for 3 weeks! After that, I didn’t continue playing daily, but I was a lot more motivated than before! Especially when I was bored, my mind was directing my mood there! (and not to unproductive, easy “activities”…)
So, I challenge you to try it! Be your own Mentor! Apply “The Rule of 2” into your daily life, build new habits, and create a better version of yourself!
